Ty'n Lon
A traditional cottage with an attached cowshed and single storey rear extension.
In structurally poor condition, the planners wanted to keep the traditional appearance and limited the height and style of any extension.
The clients were sympathetic to 'green' specification. This includes cellulose fibre roof insulation between I-section rafters throughout, sheep’s wool insulation to the walls of the cowshed to form a farmhouse kitchen, and 200mm of expanded polystyrene and render to the dense locally-sourced concrete block single skin walls of the rear extension. This was rebuilt on two floors to link the house and the cowshed, and to provide a roof slope to carry the solar water panels. These are above a deep eaves cupboard next to the first floor bathroom and above the WC and utility room. The unheated conservatory tucks in below this roof on the south side.
All the doors, windows and joinery were specially made by a local joiner.
